Q. What is Pilates?
Developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early part of the 1920’s, Pilates is a form of exercise that centers around building your core muscles. Mr. Pilates brought his unique method of physical and mental conditioning to the United States in 1923 and soon had quite a following of dancers and athletes.
Q. What are the benefits of Pilates?
Pilates helps you build long lean muscles and helps you achieve range of motion. Pilates also helps develop better posture, increases strength and stability, helps prevent injury, enhances balance, heightens body awareness and is a great complement to other forms of exercise.
Q. Is Pilates like yoga?
Pilates and yoga are both considered mind-body type methods of movement; both emphasize deep breathing and smooth, long movements that encourage your muscles to relax and lengthen. While yoga requires moving from one posture to the next, pilates flows through a series of dynamic movements.
Q. What kind of results can I expect to see from doing pilates?
From doing Pilates you will see an increase in flexibility, mobility, balance, and body awareness, as well as a decrease in back pain and other general pains. Pilates is also very effective for toning and weight maintenance.
Q. How long will I have to do Pilates before I see results?
The average active person doing 2-3 classes per week should see some results within 10-12 classes. This will vary depending on the number of classes you take each week and whether you participate in other physical activities.
