    ABOUT PILATES

Discover the Benefits of Pilates!

Pilates was originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early twentieth century. Using a blend of Eastern and Western exercise regimens- from ancient Greco-Roman workouts to yoga and zen- Pilates created his new exercise program based around principles of core strength, flexibility, and the elongation of muscle groups.

Concentrating on the core abdominal and back muscles, Pilates works all body muscle groups correctly. Proper breathing throughout the workout leaves you feeling refreshed and energized. As you learn the flowing motions of the Pilates method, you will experience a new sense of inner harmony.

Pilates will help you:

  • build strength
  • increase flexibility
  • improve coordination, balance and posture
  • relieve back pain

The main difference between Pilates and other forms of exercise is that Pilates was created to increase the overall health and wellness of the student, rather than simply for aesthetic effect. Strength is built not only in the large muscle groups, but in the smaller supporting muscle groups as well, which results in more total fitness and longer-lasting strength and health. It can be formatted to fit in with any exercise or wellness goals- from weight loss to the rehabilitation of an injury, from day-to-day fitness to a much-needed increase in strength and flexibility- and is safe to practice at any age or level of experience.

About the Pilates Method

The Pilates method of physical and mental conditioning strengthens the core abdominal and back muscles, elongates the entire muscular system and increases flexibility. The method was developed by Joseph H. Pilates to help rehabilitate injured World War I veterans.

Childhood bouts of asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever inspired Joseph Pilates to study anatomy and both Eastern and Western forms of exercise. He eventually designed apparatus customized to his own physiology. Pilates brought his conditioning method to the United States in the early 1920s.

Dancers/choreographers Martha Graham and George Balanchine and other performing artists in New York City discovered the benefits of the Pilates method in the 1950s. Athletes have come to depend on Pilates to keep them in competition shape and reduce the risk of injury. Because it provides an intense but low-impact workout, Pilates is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels and is one of today's fastest growing fitness trends.

Is Pilates Right for You?

In a word, YES!! No matter what your age, no matter what your current fitness level, Pilates will help you gain strength, flexibility and coordination. Choose from a variety of classes and individual instruction options to meet your needs and goals.

Getting started

We recommend working one-on-one with one of our highly-trained instructors to get started. We'll begin with a short consultation to discuss your goals. Then your instructor will customize a workout just for you. It might include a combination of exercising on the Reformer or Cadillac Pilates apparatus, working on the mat, using the cardio equipment, working with resistance bands or working on the stability ball. Private instruction will help you build strength, learn proper Pilates breathing, gain flexibility and teach you to target your core muscles.

If you have special health concerns
Many of our students have sports injuries, back problems or osteopenia/osteoporosis. If you have a health concern, we will customize a safe exercise program that will help you build strength and feel better.

After one or more private instruction sessions, you'll be ready to join a class.

Mat and fitness classes

All classes (except Cardio Pilates, Reformer and Intermediate/Advanced classes) are open to new students at all times. There are new students in class all the time, so don't worry about being the only newcomer!

We recommend the following classes for beginners:

  • Pilates Beginner/Intermediate (Levels 1-4) Mat Classes
  • Pilates/Ball/Band
  • Cardio Dance Fusion
